Heaven or Whatever - Shane Koyczan - VFX project

As a kid I was a terrible Catholic... as an adult I'm an okay atheist. I've seen religion do good. I've known people who were able to turn their entire lives around because they found God. That just hasn't been my experience. I think, in this life, we search for what gives us comfort.

I have been friends with Spoken word artist and Poet Shane Koyczan for many years, and we have always wanted to work on a project together. Finally we have something, Shane partnered with Director Stuart Gillies and they created a wonderful video to a piece that Shane wrote about relating to his Grandfather.

I was lucky enough to add some VFX elements to the short and work with Stuart and Shane directly. Hopefully we can do it again.

Here is a final version of the video that we shot last summer, I supervised the VFX, and built a team of two artists. Many o' long days and nights shooting these scenes. They turned out very well.

We added the magical doorway shots with VFX and then added the 3d floaty lights particle effects.

Q&A with me about the VFX on Supernatural

Here is a link to the Q&A session I did for the Supernatural VFX Non-Con. We had a great night in Aug2013 where Supernatural Fans from all over the world came for the Vancouver Supernatural Convention. So many nice fans wanted to need to the VFX crew so we all met up at the Storm Crow Tavern in Vancouver.

We filled all the seats in the Tavern with people excited to learn about behind the scenes info on how we make our Visual Effects.

This has been the biggest video shoot so far, and its not even done yet. Artino at Fresh Ninja is writer/director for this video again and he pushing it to the limits.

Ursus the bear - Streetwear Spot

Our first fully CG projects. When the director (Andy) Tin Pak Lau approached me he had the vision for this spot fully formed in his head. Throughout the development cycle Andy has stayed true to his vision with themes of time dilation, style and cyclical trends showing that the Ursus brand of streetwear is something fresh but also nostalgic.

We wanted a 80's style look of the flying through space and took inspiration of old Doctor Who openings. There was the option to push the VHS quality to levels much higher (or lower as it were), or play out the large CRT pixels, however the slight over saturation we feel plays a nicer and more traditional look without hitting you in the face.

The CG was created by local artist Pascal Polic who did a simple 3D cylinder in Maya and applied painted star fields. We used a few different star layers to create depth and speed.

Simple techniques can be applied to create nice looking effects. The most common way to do this shot would have been to suspend him on wires with a harness, light a greenscreen cove and shoot. Our budget didn't allow for that. So it was parking lot, apple boxes, a greenscreen on the ground and a jib arm. Easy as pie, just make sure your actor has strong abs.

So there you have it, easy and cheap but looks effective.
